Ask any executive about the biggest challenge facing organizations today, and chances are you will hear terms such as AI, digital transformation, cybersecurity, the energy transition, or geopolitical uncertainty. Understandably so. The world is changing faster than ever, and technology is playing a leading role in that transformation. Yet in almost every transformation initiative I encounter, the ultimate determining factor for success is people.
Organizations that fail to invest in data, AI, cloud technologies, and cybersecurity risk falling behind. Emerging technologies offer tremendous opportunities to work more efficiently, accelerate innovation, and make better-informed decisions. However, in practice, I see that successful digital transformation rarely comes down to technology alone. What makes the difference is people’s ability to understand new technologies, apply them effectively, and create value with them.
Many organizations invest heavily in new technologies. AI solutions are rolled out, processes are digitized, and new platforms are implemented. Expectations are high. Yet disappointment often follows when the anticipated impact fails to materialize. Not because the technology itself does not work, but because employees struggle to fully leverage these new capabilities. Organizations may lack the right digital skills, sufficient buy-in, or ways of working that align with the change.
That is why I believe the question should not be: “How do we implement new technology?” The far more important question is: “Do we have the people and skills needed to make this change successful?”
Digital transformation succeeds because of t̶e̶c̶h̶n̶o̶l̶o̶g̶y people!
Successful digital transformation starts with people. By developing the right skills, embracing change, and applying technology effectively, they drive lasting business impact.
The shelf life of knowledge is becoming increasingly short. Whereas roles used to remain relatively stable for years, the skills required for success are now evolving at an unprecedented pace, driven by AI, automation, and continuous technological advancements. As a result, organizations can no longer rely on one-off training initiatives or occasional upskilling efforts. The organizations that thrive are those that build a culture where learning becomes part of everyday work.
A future-proof organization is not defined by technical expertise alone. Technical skills certainly matter, but qualities such as adaptability, curiosity, collaboration, leadership, and the ability to continuously absorb new knowledge are just as important. In other words, tomorrow’s winners will not be the organizations with the most technology. They will be the organizations that can develop new skills the fastest.
What stands out to me is that the challenge is remarkably consistent across industries and transformation programs. Whether it involves AI implementation, the execution of national digitalization strategies, digital and operational transformation within defense organizations, the energy transition, or growth and transformation programs in the mid-market segment, technology is rarely the biggest obstacle.
The real challenge lies in developing the right capabilities, creating buy-in, and helping people embrace new ways of working. Ultimately, these are the factors that determine whether an investment generates real value. In fact, I regularly see organizations making significant investments in technology while paying less attention to whether their people are ready for the change. As a result, transformation efforts become stuck in plans and systems, while the expected business value never fully materializes.
Successful organizations take the opposite approach. They invest not only in technology but also in the development of their people. As a result, they are able to adapt more quickly, accelerate innovation, and seize new opportunities.
That is why I believe organizations need to look beyond purchasing individual training courses. Training remains important, of course, but training alone does not transform an organization. Successful digital transformation requires an integrated approach. It starts with understanding current and future skill requirements. It continues with the development of targeted learning pathways, supporting adoption, measuring impact, and, above all, embedding learning into day-to-day operations. This is why we increasingly talk about capability building rather than training. After all, the goal is not simply for employees to attend a course. The goal is to enable organizations to adapt more quickly, accelerate innovation, and successfully respond to new developments. Achieving this requires more than knowledge transfer. It requires developing the skills, behaviors, and mindset needed to make change successful and sustainable.
Many organizations see technology as the key to future readiness. I see it differently. AI is becoming more accessible. Technology itself is becoming available faster than ever. In the near future, competitive advantage will no longer be determined by the tools you purchase, but by how quickly your organization learns, adapts, and applies new knowledge. The organizations that succeed will not necessarily be those with the most advanced technology. They will be the ones that enable their people to thrive in a world of constant change. Because ultimately, a future-proof organization does not start with technology. It starts with people. And that is precisely where the greatest opportunity lies for organizations today.
The question is not whether your organization will digitize. The question is whether your people are ready for it.
